These were first discovered by people mining for gold in Montana. It was in 1895 that a man named Jake Hoover collected enough blue pebbles to fill a cigar box which he sent to one of the best known jewelers of the time, Tiffany \u0026amp; Co. It was the \u003cb\u003efamed \u003c\/b\u003eDr. George Frederick Kunz, who worked for Tiffany's at the time who first identified them as sapphire. This cigar box of blue pebbles was never returned to Mr. Hoover.
